Deerfield Academy

Overview

Deerfield Academy is in the historical town of Deerfield, MA, so driving up to campus, the environment has a different feel than many other schools, surrounded by historical houses and a “village” ambiance. But once you get onto campus, the feeling is of a mixture of old and new. The newest building on campus is the library, which just opened in January 2016 (it still “smelled new” when I walked in) and there is also a new student center/ arts building, with a beautiful theatre and art museum (displaying an impressive range of student are when I was there at the end of term). There are also a number of older classroom buildings, bustling with students heading in and out between classes.

Traditions

Deerfield is known for their traditions, including walking around the seal in front of the athletics building, and having a number of sit down meals each week, where students and faculty come together to engage in conversation. Deerfield also has a newer tradition of not talking on cell phones or having ear buds in while walking along the paths around campus, thus encouraging students to interact with each other as they walk around.

Students

Deerfield is looking for well-rounded students, who will bring a variety of strengths and interests to campus. Co-curricular activities are required after classes – this can be a sport, or another activity that takes place every weekday, such as yearbook, dance, or community service.
