Santa Catalina School

Overview

Santa Catalina is an all-girls boarding school located in Monterey, California, which is a 2-hour drive south of San Francisco. The boarding school is for Grades 9-12 (Upper School), while there is also a Lower School and a Middle School, comprised of co-ed day students in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8.  The campus is in a Spanish hacienda style and it was a typical warm and sunny California day when I visited.

Leadership

Santa Catalina has an extensive advisory and counseling program to provide abundant guidance for its students. One of the unique things about Santa Catalina is its Journey program, a weekly class across all four years of Upper School that teaches important skills outside of the regular academic classes. Students learn study skills, conflict resolution, team building, leadership and receive counseling for college and beyond, among many different topics. The program also includes community service and guest speakers. Additionally, each student also meets with an assigned advisor at least once a month.

Religion

As a Catholic school, Santa Catalina incorporates religion in the students’ daily life to instill values and promote personal growth. All students attend chapel and a prayer service weekly. Students also take religious studies classes each year. While the school is Catholic, it is welcoming of all religions.
