St Marks School

Overview

On a beautiful summer day, I visited St. Mark’s School. The feeling of the school is one of closeness and togetherness. Most of the buildings are close, and the main classrooms house dorms for upperclassmen above, so it’s quite convenient for students to get from dorm to class to lunch quickly. The schools is “small by design” (about 370 students), according to the admissions officer I met with, but with a lot of opportunities for the students.

Features

From a buildings perspective, St. Mark’s has two recent additions: the new STEM Center, and the recently completed arts center. Both facilities have opened up opportunities for students in these areas. In STEM, St. Marks has some interesting courses that combine teaching across subject areas. And the arts center has opened up opportunities for both performance and student work space.

Programs

In addition, St. Mark’s is doing some interesting things with their programming. One is that they have replaced traditional Saturday classes with practical and unique classes students select (Decision Making, Legos in Leadership, Sociology Through Hip Hop). This year they are also launching a terms on May that will enable students to do a 2-3 week course that gets them off campus, into more experiential learning.
