Whittier College

“Let Your Life Speak.” This is the tagline Whittier uses on their communication with students, and it came across throughout my visit to the campus. The emphasis on being who you want to be, and also developing during your time at Whittier is something the school seems to truly value.

Whittier College is located outside of LA, and is walking distance for a cute downtown area with shops and restaurants. The campus is quite diverse, and the school prides itself on a long history of social justice, equality, fairness, and community.

On campus, Whittier has a new state of the art science building, which was quite impressive to see, and they also emphasized their strong scholars program. As a small liberal arts college, Whittier encourages students to take a broad range of courses, and the requirement is structured to include courses in the Four C’s: Community, Communication, Cultural Perspectives, and Connections (courses team-taught by professors such as political science and math teaching cryptography, or physics and creative writing professors teaching a course in science fiction).

Whittier provides a scholarship for every student to study overseas (2,000USD), called the Global Poet Scholarship, as their mascot is Johnny Poet. The emphasis is on developing students, so you don’t have to be “perfect” to get in, but you do need to have a love for learning.
